At the Cottage, our individualized programs allow and encourage your child to progress rapidly in their learning and to develop an enthusiasm for learning. Individualized programming also develops your child’s independence, confidence and feelings of success. In all our programs, we focus on learning about the relationship with the Earth, all living things that we share our Earth home with and the importance and interaction of humans with our environment. Our Contemporary Montessori philosophy includes materials for sensorial, integrated practical life, math, language arts, science and geography materials in the Primary classrooms (ages 2 1/2 years through Kindergarten). These are balanced with materials for exploration and investigation including creative art, dramatic play and blocks, building, construction and STEM.
We recognize that a balance with teacher directed activities are also important. Large and small group activities will help your child prepare for public school, where the teacher/student ratios seldom allow for individualized programing. During group activities, your child will also develop a new set of social skills which differ from those developed during individual or very small group activity times (following directions, taking turns, being sensitive to others’ needs, social problem solving and cooperation).
Our goal is to provide an interesting, fun and challenging program in an open, well designed and structured environment. When challenging behaviors do arise, teachers use visual supports, positive redirection, and encourage children to use problem solving skills. We understand that friendship skills, emotional literacy and development of self regulation are skills that must be supported in the classroom These skills are taught through lessons/activities, modeling and encouragement. At times classroom staff, administrators and parents must work together to provide individualized classroom support.
